Course Calendar

About this course:

The Japan Sommelier Association (JSA) was formed in 1969 with the objective of furthering a better understanding of wine and other beverages and for their promotion in Japan.

The word sommelier is more often associated with wine but in recent years the JSA has focused on Sake and developed the Sake Diploma certification. The Sake Diploma is now one of the most famous and prestigious qualifications in Japan.

Course objective:

TBC Academy administers the Sake Diploma exam on behalf of The Japan Sommelier Association, for those in hopes to become Sake Sommeliers. The exam covers both sake and shochu with the aim to provide a deeper understanding of sake and support the promotion of Japanese food culture.

  • Structured tasting based on examination format
  • Sake Service and storage
  • Food pairing concepts
  • Shochu Production & service
  • Shochu tasting based on examination format

Duration:

6 Sessions (8 Hour each) + 1 Session (Exam)

Course assessment:

  • Written Exam - 60 minutes
    • 100 questions to answer
  • Tasting Exam - 40 minutes.
    • Blind tasting of 4 sakes, 2 shochu and/or awamori
  • Short Essay Exam - 20 minutes.
    • 2 questions

There will be no break between the tasting exam and the short
essay exam. Short Essay commences immediately after Tasting papers are collected.

Entry Requirements:

There are no entry requirements for this qualification, however due to the vigor of the exam, it is HIGHLY recommended that you have gained fundamentals from least attained 1 of the following credentials or it’s equivalent:

  • WSET Level 3 Award in Sake
  • SSI International Kikisake-shi

 And taken the JSA Sake Diploma course with TBC Academy.

Certification:

Successful candidates will receive a pin badge, certification card and diploma certificate.  Certified JSA Sake Diploma International holders are also eligible to participate in the Sake Diploma Competition organized by JSA every three years.
